CUBA
Located a mere ninety miles from the continental United States, Cuba is a photographer’s dream. Although signs of modernization are beginning to emerge in Havana and elsewhere, Cuba has been stuck in a time warp following the Revolution in 1959.
The economic embargo that has so brutally impacted the lives of everyday Cubans has also had the unintended effect of preserving an antique charm that can’t be found anywhere else in the Caribbean basin.
The old American cars from the 1950s. The plazas in Cinefuegos and Remedios. The crumbling candy-colored buildings in Havana. The waves crashing alongside the Malecon.
To photograph Cuba is to feel, and be inspired by, the courage and nobility of the Cuban people who have persevered in spite of crushing privation – to be faced with opulence and ruin at the same time. The only way I can describe what I experienced is to liken it to a living museum.
