China
Beginning in the 1850s, western photographers have sought to capture the exoticism, intrigue and visual allure of China. With a population of 1.4 billion and a physical footprint of over 3.7 million square miles, China is one of the oldest civilizations on Earth and one of the most visually compelling.
From the mountain high pillars of rock at Zhangjiate wreathed in mist to the colorful patchwork of fields in Dongchuan to the rock formations at Gansu Canyon to the thousands of bicyclists commuting in Beijing on any given morning, China is a feast for the senses.
For me, China is endlessly fascinating – its people, its geography, its traditions and the incredible scale and scope that are on display virtually everywhere you go. It’s a country of incredible contrasts – lush green terraced farmland, the urban sprawl of Shanghai, stunning blue waterways and remote villages.
No one can spend time in China and not be changed by it. I know I was.
